Bustiers

Bustiers lift, shape and show off in one piece: a structured cup, light boning through the body and a finish that works as lingerie or as a top on a night out. Choose by bust size first and waist second, because the cups have to fit for the piece to sit right. Unlike a corset, a bustier shapes gently and is comfortable for hours. Everything ships in plain packaging with no indication of the contents or the sender.

Bustiers buying guide

This page lists every bustier we stock, from satin and lace boudoir pieces to wet-look and leather club tops. If you already know what you want, the products above are the whole range. If you are still choosing, the sections below cover what actually separates one bustier from another, written from the questions customers ask us most rather than a manufacturer brochure.

Sizing and fit

A bustier is fitted around the bust and ribcage, so measure your bust at the fullest point and your underbust directly beneath it, then match both against the chart on the product. The cups decide the fit: if they gape or spill, the whole piece sits wrong however well the waist fits.

Adult apparel routinely runs one to two sizes small compared with high-street clothing. If you are between sizes, go up, and choose a queen or plus-cut piece rather than stretching a one-size bustier over a fuller figure.

Materials and what they demand

Satin and lace give the classic boudoir look but snag on rings and jewelry. Wet-look, PVC and vinyl give a glossy club finish but do not breathe, so they suit a few hours rather than a whole day. Leather bustiers mould to the body with wear and last for years.

Most bustiers use flexible plastic boning, which shapes and supports without the cinch of a steel-boned corset. Hook-and-eye backs are easiest to get into alone; lace-up backs give more adjustment; front busks and zips make dressing quick.

Care that preserves it

Hand wash satin, lace and mesh in cool water with a mild detergent and dry flat, away from direct heat. Wipe wet-look and vinyl with a damp cloth and a drop of silicone-free dressing aid, and store flat or hung so the boning never kinks. Never tumble dry a boned piece.

Frequently asked questions about bustiers

What is the difference between a bustier and a corset? A corset is built to reduce the waist with steel boning and lacing. A bustier is built to lift and shape the bust, with lighter boning, and does not cinch the waist in the same way.

Can I wear a bustier as a top? Yes. Many of the pieces here are designed to be worn out with a skirt, jeans or a jacket over the top, especially the wet-look and leather styles.

Do bustiers have garter straps? Some do and some come with detachable straps. Check the product description; it lists what is included.

Will a bustier work with a larger bust? Yes, if you choose by cup and bust measurement. Underwired styles with wider straps give the most support.

Common mistakes when buying bustiers

Choosing by waist size rather than bust size, and ending up with cups that do not fit.

Expecting a bustier to reduce the waist like a corset. If waist shaping is what you want, look at steel-boned corsets instead.
