Men's Harness & Engineer Boots buying guide
This page lists every men's harness and engineer boot we stock. If you already know what you want, the products above are the whole range. If you are still choosing, the sections below cover what actually separates one biker boot from another, written from the questions customers ask us most rather than a manufacturer brochure.
Sizing and fit
Harness boots are pull-ons, held on by a firm fit across the instep and heel, so they should feel snug going on and slip only slightly at the heel until the sole flexes. Engineer boots add a buckled strap across the instep and another at the top of the shaft, which lets you tighten the fit. Side zips, like those on the 7 inch harness and 16 inch engineer zipper boots, make a close fit much easier to get on.
For the 13 and 16 inch boots, measure your calf over the jeans you will tuck in, or decide to wear the jeans outside. Measure foot length in the evening with riding socks on and match it against the chart on the listing.
Materials and what they demand
The two styles differ by their hardware. A harness boot has a strap and ring across the ankle; an engineer boot has a buckled instep strap and a top strap, usually on a taller shaft. Both have a defined heel that keeps the foot planted on the footpeg and no laces to catch on the bike, which is why riders prefer them. The stonewash zipper lace model trades that for laces backed by a zip.
Check each listing for the upper, sole and features. The 13 inch harness boot is listed as waterproof; the 6 inch double zipper boot adds reflective detail for visibility at night.
Care that preserves it
Road grime, salt and oil break leather down, so wipe boots after a ride and clean them properly every few weeks. Condition when the leather looks dry, paying attention to the gear-shift side, which wears first. Brush grit out of zips and run a zip lubricant along the teeth occasionally. Wipe buckles and rings dry to keep them from tarnishing.
Frequently asked questions about men's harness & engineer boots
Q. Harness or engineer? A. Harness boots are simpler and shorter; engineer boots are taller, adjustable at the instep and top, and give more shin cover.
Q. Will the shift lever scuff them? A. Yes, over time. Some riders add a shift pad; conditioning keeps the scuffed area supple.
Q. Can I walk all day in them? A. Once broken in, many riders do, but they are heavier than casual boots.
Common mistakes when buying men's harness & engineer boots
The usual mistake is buying a pull-on harness boot loose so it goes on easily, then fighting heel lift and a sloppy feel on the pegs. The other is choosing a 16 inch boot without checking that the shaft clears the calf with jeans tucked in. Buy snug, measure the calf, and pick zips if getting a close-fitting boot on and off is a struggle.
