Choosing prosthetic underwear

How it differs from a harness brief

A harness brief is a garment with a pouch or an O-ring that holds something separate. Prosthetic underwear has the shape cast into it. That means the closest, most continuous silhouette under clothing, with no seam or edge to read through — and it means you own one shape at one size. If you want to change the shape, or you want something lighter for all-day wear, look at Harness Underwear instead.

Sizing

Size the waistband to your body, not to the prosthetic. A brief that is loose at the hip lets the weight of the silicone drag the garment down, and the shape shifts forward every time you sit. Between sizes, take the smaller one — silicone stretches with wear and body heat, and a snug fit is what holds the shape in place.

Skin tones

Most pieces come in two or three tones, usually described as light, medium and dark. Under clothing this barely matters; the garment reads as silhouette. It matters a great deal if the piece is meant to be seen. Match the surrounding skin rather than the face, which is usually darker.

Soft-packing versus firm

Read the description before assuming. Some prosthetic briefs are firm enough for penetration and say so. Many are soft-packing only — made to sit and to shape, and they will not stay rigid under pressure. If penetration is the point, a harness brief with a rigid dildo is the reliable route.

Heat and wearing time

Silicone does not breathe. A solid prosthetic brief worn eight hours in summer traps heat and moisture, and skin that stays damp against silicone gets irritated. Break every few hours where you can, and dry the skin before putting the garment back on. For all-day wear in heat, a fabric harness brief with a lighter packer is much kinder.

Cleaning and storage

Warm water and a mild unscented soap, rinsed thoroughly and air dried completely before storing. Moisture trapped inside a hollow prosthetic is what turns a good piece sour. Never use silicone lubricant on a silicone garment — it degrades the surface. Store flat or loosely rolled, never folded under weight, and keep silicone pieces apart from each other, because different formulations left in contact for months can bond and mark.

Discretion under clothing

Denim, twill and wool conceal a prosthetic almost completely. Thin jersey, swimwear and light linen do not, and will show both the outline and any edge. A smaller, softer shape under a structured fabric reads far better than a larger one under something thin.

Common mistakes

Buying for maximum size — a large prosthetic is heavy, drags the waistband and is harder to conceal, not easier. Treating a soft-packing piece as rigid. Storing a hollow brief while it is still damp inside. Using silicone lubricant on silicone.

Can I swim in one? Solid silicone holds up in water but will be visible through wet swim fabric. Check the product description first.

Will it show at airport security? Body scanners can register a prosthetic as an anomaly. It is neither illegal nor unusual and staff are trained for it, but be aware it may prompt a question.

How long do they last? Years, with proper washing and dry storage. What kills them early is trapped moisture, silicone lubricant, and being stored folded under other items.
